LOINC Italy

LOINC ® (Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes) was developed since 1994 by the Regenstrief Institute For Health Care (non-profit medical research organization associated with the University of Indiana) and the LOINC Committee. LOINC’s goal is to allow the electronic movement of clinical data from the laboratories that produce it to hospitals and medical offices. Every single LOINC record has a code that can be used in messages in HL7 and in addition LOINC offers a standard set of names and codes to identify clinical results. The Regenstrief Institute For Health Care has also developed a utility called RELMA (Regenstrief LOINC Mapping Assistant), to facilitate research within the LOINC database. The URT coordinates the spontaneous working group called LOINC ‐ Italy, with the aim of supporting sector operators in mapping the results of analysis laboratories towards the international LOINC code. The activities are carried out within the framework of the CNR-ESF Electronic Infrastructure Technological File project financed by the DIT (Department for Innovation and Technologies). The working group includes:

    – CNR – ITB (Angelo Rossi Mori)
    – CNR URT ‐ DSP (Giuseppe Alfredo Cavarretta)

    – Operations aimed at the translation into Italian of the compositional terminology of the LOINC from which to generate, for subsequent iterations, the final version of the LOINC in Italian.
